**Specimen Data**

This file contains data on the specimens used in the experiments

All specimens were Double Cantilever Beam specimens, designed following ASTM D5528-01
Specimens were manufactured from two plates of Al-2024-T3, bonded with FM94 K.03AD epoxy film adhesive. The adhesive was manufactured by Cytec.
The aluminium plates were pre-treated by chromic acid anodisation (CAA), followed by priming with BR-127 primer.
The adhesive was cured at 120 deg C and 0.4 MPa for 1 hour.
The ramp rate to and from the cure temperature was 2 deg C / minute.
After curing the plates were cut into strips, which were then milled down to the specimen dimensions.
Two threaded holes were drilled into each specimen to allow attachment of the loading blocks.

Prior to application of the adhesive, a thin sheet of teflon was placed near to the edge to initiate a 50mm starter crack (as measured from the edge of the specimen, this corresponds to a pre-crack of about 35 mm when measured from the load application point).

*Specimen dimesions*
Dimensions are in accordance to the definitions of ASTM D5528-01
A is 25 mm from the loaded end of the specimen.
B is the specimen mid-point.
C is 25 mm from the non-loaded end of the specimen.
l = length, w = width, t = thickness

* No measurement available, but specimen AE002 had the same dimensions as the other specimens, so the length is thought to have been the same as for AE001 and AE003 +/- 1 mm.
